The 66th annual SCTA Speed Week kicks off next Wednesday on the Bonneville Salt Flats! Land speed racing is so cherished by grass roots hot rodders, racers and fans partly because it’s the last frontier of American motor sport to remain unmolested by prize money and corporate sponsorship. There is no pay window on the salt flats. Bragging rights and the glory of achieving new milestones of speed suffice. Its always been that way. And we love it.
Being the 100th anniversary of Bonneville, this year’s Speed Week takes on extra significance. Entries are up, hopes are high and it’s almost time to cut it loose.
According to our friends over at Bangshift.com, no less than 9 teams in attendance have their sights set on eclipsing 500mph. Lofty goal indeed but certainly doable.
Leading the charge to 500mph is Memphis based “Gentleman” George Poteet in the sleek and powerful Speed Demon . Let’s be real – Poteet has to be favored off of last year’s 462mph blast (making them the world’s fastest piston-driven car). He’ll push the twin-turbo Earl Duttweiler-tuned Gen 1 Chevy small block as hard as he can. The car makes an estimated 2300 horsepower!
Team Vesco, Danny Thomspon, Dalton-Jackson-Mayer, Team Carbinite, the Nish Family, our friend Charlie Nearburg, Richmond and Stark, and the Hass-Shipley ‘liner are others hoping to exceed their Destination 500mph.
We wish all of these brave men and their crews the best and hope they all come home safe.
In the Destination 300 category, our friend and former Goodguys Trendsetter Alan Johnson returns to the salt flats with Paul & Betty Gilliam’s Stupidbaker door car. Since last year’s debut (which netted a 226mph clocking) they’ve done extensive dyno and wind tunnel testing. The smart money is on these folks to crush 300mph!
That’s just some of the excitement on tap! Over 540 cars have pre-entered Speed Week so there will be constant action during the August 9-15 event. We’ll keep our eye on any 500mph-plus blasts and keep y’all posted.
We’d also like to take a quick moment to tip our cap to our Goodguys founder and chairman Gary Meadors. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Gary joining the Bonneville 200mph Club! Driving the Dozier & Hegarty Chrysler flathead-8 powered streamliner, Gary ran a top speed of 223.220 in August 1994.
