H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, the former C.O.O., President and GM of Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte is in the middle of building a 1949 Jaguar sedan for the street. Long a friend of Goodguys and the man responsible for bringing the Goodguys Southwest Nationals to Lowe’s Motor Speedway (now in its 17th year) , built his first hot rod, a 1937 Ford when he was just 15 years old. He’s been hot rodding and promoting stock car races ever since.
His latest project, dubbed “Hemi Cat” will feature modern day Chrysler 300 running gear underneath a two-tone ’49 Jag sedan. It will be the only Jag of its kind that we can recall. Astonishingly, the tread width and wheelbase of the Chrysler running gear is nearly identical to that of a stock ’49 Jag, although Wheeler and his build team at Klassic Rides in Denver, North Carolina will widen the fenders four inches on all four corners.
The body and paint work is pretty much finished. The process of mating body and chassis, wiring and plumbing the car and other intricacies remain but Wheeler is anxious to get behind the wheel of his latest creation and cruise the streets of Charlotte by next summer!
Stay tuned for further updates on Hemi Cat and if you’re looking for an outstanding book to read, look no further than Wheeler’s recently released “Growing Up NASCAR: Racing’s Most Outrageous Promoter Tells All.” The Motorbooks release is available at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Borders as well as Amazon.com
