Lucas Oil Raceway, Clermont, IN – A good old fashioned Friday Night drag race is being brewed up to pound the pavement June 6th at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis. The Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing Association returns to the famous strip for a one-night-only affair and the big guns are coming out!

NHRA funny car standouts Ron Capps and Cruz Pedregon will strap into vintage styled nitro burning funny cars for a special match race that night. With a rare off weekend from their day job as NHRA super stars, Capps and Pedregon are thrilled to be able to participate in the event. “I grew up during the famous funny car wars of the 1960s and 70s in southern California,” said Capps, a 41-time NHRA national event winner. “I’m driving the ‘Crop Duster’ 1977 Chevy Monza. I’ve driven several of the retro funny cars in recent years and it’s a real time warp – –just like when I was a wide eyed kid going to Orange Country International Raceway. The cars belch fire and flames. They’re styled after 1970s production cars which you don’t see in modern era drag racing. The whole vintage drag racing scene is really popular. The old school drag racing fans really dig it”

For Pedregon, getting involved in the vintage drag racing scene has played a large role in his down time from the NHRA circuit. Like Capps, Pedregon’s drag racing lineage dates back to his youth in southern California. His father Frank was a well-known drag racer in the 1960s whose calling card was to literally light his tires on fire earning him the nickname “Flamin’ Frank Pedregon.”

A year ago, Cruz built his dream funny car for weekend hobby racing – an exact replica of the “California Charger” 1977 Pontiac Trans Am – a car which inspired such awe in him as a young kid. “Drag racing is all my family’s ever known,” Pedregon said. “These old school funny cars not only bring back great memories, they allow us to go out in a pressure free environment and match race for fun. They sound good too,” he said.

In addition to the feature race between Capps and Pedregon, a full evening of drag racing is planned. Seven classes of racing competition will be featured including sportsman and bracket racing classes for hot rods, street machines and bracket cars.

Goodguys has a long, storied history at Lucas Oil Raceway @ Indianapolis. They staged the Hot Rod Nationals car show and drag race at the home of the NHRA US Nationals from 1990 through 2010 – a 20 year span. “We’re excited to get back to Lucas Oil Raceway” said Goodguys President Marc Meadors. “We spent two decades there building a legacy of hot rodding and vintage drag racing. We always get asked when we’re coming back. As a drag racer myself, it pleases me to say we’re proudly returning to one of the premier facilities in the history of NHRA drag racing.”

Lucas Oil Raceway gates open Friday June 6th at 1pm with time trials at 3pm. Sportsman eliminations begin at 6pm. Capps and Pedregon are scheduled to match race at 7pm and 9pm. General admission is $20, kids 7-12 $6.
