The Goodguys 14th Del Mar Nationals, slated for April 4-6 is coming fast. Known far and wide as “The Best in the West”, the event has long been known for attracting the finest custom cars, street rods, hot rods, muscle cars and trucks from across the western region and even from the Midwest and Far East. The inviting ocean air, swaying palms and blooming flowers, not to mention the upscale beach side village of Del Mar appeal to hot rodders and perhaps more important, hot rodders’ wives! A happy wife equals a happy life, right guys?

Several of this season’s top rods will be exhibited inside the spacious Pat O’Brien Hall at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. They’ll be in competition for the Goodguys 2014 March Performance Street Rod d’Elegance award. The Street Rod d’Elegance is actually the oldest major national award Goodguys gives out. It was first presented in 1991 at the Monterey Fairgrounds to Dave Marasco’s black 1929 Model A roadster pickup.

Wes and Vivian Rydell will attend with their 1935 Chevy Standard Phaeton “The Black Bow Tie.” Built by Rad Rides in Manteno, Illinois – the car won the “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” award at the 65th Grand National Roadster Show back in January.

Joining Rydell in competition will be a stunning new 1939 Ford convertible from the Steve’s Auto Restorations team in Oregon. Owner Dave Hall is a former Goodguys Custom Rod of the Year winner. Janeen Drinkard’s ’40 Chevy, a family heirloom since it was purchased brand new by her grandmother will attend, as will Jack LoPresti’s stunning yellow pearl 1935 Chevy. Jim Bridgewater’s ’37 Ford from Arizona is coming to compete as is Ben Von Kleinsmid’s full fendered 1932 Ford roadster.

The award is just one of many highlights in Del Mar this spring. Overhaulin’s Chip Foose will make a Sunday appearance to sign autographs, the Hot Rodder’s of Tomorrow Engine Challenge will be on hand, as will the amazing, tire screeching Goodguys AutoCross. Vendor exhibits, the Goodguys Nitro Thunderfest, special woodie exhibit, model car show, swap meet & car corral, FREE kids entertainment and more will be offered.
