Skip & Debbie Walls’ 1969 Camaro “Loka-RS” has won the Goodguys 2013 Grundy Worldwide Insurance Muscle Machine of the Year award. The Camaro showcases the extreme talent of commissioned builders Goolsby Customs of Alabama.
The Walls’ Camaro, built with concept-car ideology, tightly follows the sweet lines of a 1969 Camaro with modern day accents and over-the-top build quality from the talent-laden Goolsby team.
Working off a Ben Hermance design, mods include tucked bumpers, late model door handles, 3rd-gen Camaro side mirrors, a custom rear wing, one-off front & rear valances, rear exhaust outlets, sunken side grills and hood vents.
The concept car theme is carried into the cabin with a modern-looking interior. Goolsby crafted a custom dash, filling it with Classic Instruments gauges, new-style bezels, a flat screen monitor and prominent AC vents. Of course the console houses a Lokar shifter! M&M Hot Rod Interiors of Holly Pond, Alabama gets credit for the leather & suede seats and upholstery.
Underneath, the Camaro is all business. A 543hp Mast Motorsports LS3 and Americasn Powertrain T-56 transmission rest in a Roadster Shop Fast Track chassis. A big brake kit from Baer puts a stop to the Nutek 19 and 20-inch 10-spoke deep concave wheels.
The Walls’ red hot cherry ’69 Camaro will be one of the featured attractions inside the “Champion’s Arena” sponsored by Street Rod Headquarters at the Goodguys 16th annual Southwest Nationals, November 15-17 at Westworld in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Runner Up finalists for this year’s award included: Larry Woo, Solon, Ohio (’68 Camaro), Steve Keefer, Brentwood, CA (’69 Camaro), Brian Hobaugh, San Ramon, CA (’65 Corvette), Gregg Blundell, Carlsbad, CA (’69 Camaro), Clayton & Mary Graham, Baker, MT (’67 Camaro), Paul VanNus, Kalamazoo, MI (’67 Chevy II), Greg Cullun, High Ridge, MO (’69 Camaro) and Sid Tracy, Champaign, IL (’69 Pontiac Firebird).
