It was one for the record books up at the Bonneville Salt Flats last week as the 65th annual Speed Week land speed event attracted hundreds of participants in pursuit of the ultimate prize – a new speed record.
One of the cars we were following included the Poteet & Main streamliner driven by hot rodder and 2013 Street Machine of the Year winner George Poteet of Memphis. On Friday, August 16th, Poteet blasted through the timing traps at a mind-boggling 451mph, setting an official 5th mile speed of 437.183. That time stands as the fastest speed in the SCTA record books! Poteet and partner Ron Main completely obliterated the old class record of 390.709! Congrats guys!
Former Goodguys Trendsetter Alan Johnson and the Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop team had a successful outing as well with the debut of Paul & Betty Gilliam’s ’53 Studebaker. “Team Stupidbaker” as they’re known with Shane Phillips at the wheel turned in a top speed of 226 mph. The Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop crew had been in an all-out thrash for months to get the car ready for Bonneville and a 226mph debut is not too shabby! They’re shooting for 300mph –a speed they hope to reach next year.
