Under perfect sunny skies, the Goodguys 22nd Heartland Nationals presented by iLLowa Communications was not only serious fun, it was one for the record books.

An event record 4,300 cars flocked here to Des Moines from 28 states with a massive weekend crowd in excess of 75,000. It was a patriotic 4th of July Holiday weekend full of every kind of vintage show car imaginable!

The Iowa State Fairgrounds is a BIG reason why this event is so darn much fun! Stately shade trees, wide streets and boulevards, amazing food with every kind of concoction imaginable, several sit-down full service restaurants and bars and a vintage grandstand to host Saturday night’s stage show & fireworks.

One of several annual highlights of the Heartland Nationals is cruisin’ Grand Ave on Saturday. Starting as early as 6am, the main artery of the fairgrounds begins to bustle with cars and people. By 2pm Saturday afternoon it’s a sight to behold! Literally tens of thousands of people and show cars swarm the street like ants! To make it even more spectacular, the age old sky tram offers rides high above the street to see it all below.

Another highlight here is the massive Goodguys AutoCross. With lap times in excess of one minute, high rpms and stressed push rods are the order of the day. It simply doesn’t get any more exciting than this for the fence hangers!

The last picture we’d like to paint from the historic weekend is the quality of cars here. From million dollar hand formed rods & customs to bone stick 100-point restorations – never before have we seen quality quite like this here in Des Moines.

Put it all together and you’ve got an absolutely spectacular patriot 4th of July weekend in America’s Heartland. If you’ve never been here, DON’T MISS it next year! We’ll be right back here July 4-6, 2014!
