When the sun is shining and the palms are swaying – there’s simply no better backdrop for a Goodguys event than Del Mar! That was this case this past weekend as the Goodguys 13th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals featured three full days of brilliant sunshine, mild temperatures and some hot, hot cars!
Right away, participants and fans noticed an all new event layout with the Goodguys AutoCross being held front and center in the fairgrounds west lot, making it a huge part of the event. Thousands of fans hung on the fence as the nation’s best AutoCrossers slugged it out on a challenging, twisty course! Even the nation’s magazine editor’s came out for the 6th annual Editor’s Shootout AutoCross – with Car Craft Magazine’s Jeff Smith taking the win in the special event.
“Fast” Mary Pozzi drove her way to the weekend’s fastest AutoCross lap (53.243) earning the coveted spot in November Goodguys AutoCross Finals Shootout presented by BFGoodrich. Greg Thurmond (Street Machine), Mike Hickman (Truck Class), Don Chemellow and Tom Kamman (All American Sunday) were also big class winners.

While the outdoor show filled every square inch of the fairgrounds (including rod & custom parking in all new areas never used at this event), the indoor show housed the top cars in the big show. The competition for the Goodguys 2013 March Performance Street Rod d’Elegance award was the stiffest we’ve seen in years. Getting to the top 5 finalists was NOT easy. The finalists included Harold Chapman Jr (’33 Ford), Jerry Kjensrud (’39 Chevy), Ron Cizek (’40 Ford), George Sepulveda (’38 Ford) and Roger Hill (’39 Chevy).
In the end when all votes were tallied, it was Cizek’s Ridler-winning ’40 Ford winning the Del Mar d’Elegance crown. Click here to read all about this superior street rod.
