15th Southwest Nationals Rewind – Record Car Count, Stellar Cars Highlight Sun Soaked Weekend

-A record number of show cars highlighted the Goodguys 15th Southwest Nationals

In sports and auto racing there’s an old saying that goes something like this…”Records were made to be broken.” That old adage came to fruition this past weekend during a sun-soaked version of the Goodguys 15th Southwest Nationals at the Westworld Equestrian Complex just north of Scottsdale, Arizona. Over 2,900 vintage rods, customs, classics, tricked out trucks and muscle machines made the trip here – filling literally every square inch of the property and toppling the previous record of just over 2,700 cars a few years back. As one long time newspaper man stated – “I think things might be turning around” when it comes to the old car hobby.

-Cruisin the main drag at Westworld

Things got off to a hot start on Thursday with the biggest hot rod cruise the event has ever seen. Organized by the yellow-shirted Over the Hill Gang Phoenix chapter – the cruise visited some of the valley’s premier collections and rod shops before ending at Drew’s Garage in Tempe where host Drew Tennant served the throngs a prime rib dinner!

-The "Champion's Arena" presented by Street Rod Headquarters featured the Goodguys Top 12 Cars of the Year

Out at Westworld, the Goodguys Top 12 Cars of the Year were a show highlight as they came in from all over the country to display together as a group inside the Champion’s Arena presented by Street Rod Headquarters. Adding to the significance and visual appeal was the custom Snap-on toolboxes each winner got adorned with pictures of their winning machines. It was quite a site.

The Saturday crush started at dawn and didn’t let up until mid afternoon. Westworld looked like Woodstock. Really it did. It was a sea of chrome, flames, EZ UP awnings and a melting pot crowd including grandpa’s to grandkids.

-Rockin Rob McGregor won the Goodguys AutoCross Pro Class in his '69 Chevy C10

On the west side of the property, the nations finest relentlessly flogged their AutoCross machines burning rubber and pounding gears. They left it all out there – the skid marks prove it!
