The Dean of American Motorsports has Passed Away

-Chris Economaki

The Dean of American Motorsports is dead. Editor, on-air personality and author, Chris Economaki impacted American Motorsports more than any other journalist. He was 91.

Economaki was always a friend to the Goodguys Rod & Custom Association. In the 1990s, when the Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing Association was gathering momentum through our “West Coast Championship Series” points events, Economacki ran some coverage in his weekly National Speed Sport News tabloid on occasion and even a few pictures from time to time. Back then – everything was sent to him in the U.S. mail so it was always a nice surprise to see our stories in his publication.

He was a huge fan of the Goodguys Gazette and commented in his weekly column one year “the best Christmas present I got this season was a wall clock from Goodguys!”

Generations of gear heads grew up watching Economaki calling racing events from the Indy 500 to sprint car races to NHRA drag racing on a variety of networks. His longest running TV gig was with ABC’s Wide World of Sports. He was an American institution remaining a fan of auto racing on all levels until his death.

National Speed Sport News Senior Editor Mike Kerchner penned a great obituary today. Click here to read it. RIP Chris and thank you for your service to our industry!
