The Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah and its SCTA sanctioned land speed trials is the last “pure” form of motorsport left in America. There is no purse money. There are no corporate suites. Out on the salt, it’s just men and their machines, pushing the envelope of speed to leave their mark in the record books.
With the 61st SCTA “Speed Week” kicking off today, we thought we’d tip our cap to the land speed purists and tell you about the Save the Salt Coalition. The Save the Salt Coalition has a simple aim – to our national treasure…The Bonneville Salt Flats. From the first speed record attempts in 1914 and through the present day, hundreds of records have been set and broken in a variety of automotive and motorcycle classes by an international field of drivers.
But the salt is eroding and disappearing. Years of salt removal by an adjoining potash mining operation have damaged the salt flats. Between 1963 and 1982, an estimated 11 million tons of salt was withdrawn. By the mid-1990s, the historic raceway had lost over 18 inches of salt crust. Originally 96,000 acres in size, the BSF has been reduced to about 30,000 acres and those lands are threatened unless the salt is returned.
In 1997, under the watchful eye of the Save the Salt Coalition, the “Salt Laydown Project” began – a process by which brine water was pumped back onto the salt at the rate of 1.5 million tons of salt each year for 5 years. Though a huge help, the project came to an end in 2002. Though some replenishment continues today, more needs to be done. The Save the Salt Coalition is leading the way in more replenishment efforts but need your support to continue their fight to Save the Salt!
The Save the Salt Coalition survives only with the support of interested parties like us Goodguys and motorsport purists & hot rodders! You can donate today to help! The Coalition has 5 different levels of sponsorship to fit everyone’s budget. By far the coolest package is the “Gold Membership” which not only hels the cause tremendously, but also gets you this amazing gold 1/24th scale hand-cast streamliner!
