McGaffin Looks to Rocket Past Competition in Goodguys Sponsor Shootout

-Robert McGaffin will represent Rocket Wheels in the Goodguys Sponsor Shootout AutoCross July 7th in Columbus

The 2nd annual Goodguys Sponsor Shootout AutoCross will be held Saturday, July 7th @ 9am at the Ohio Expo Center in conjunction with the Goodguys 15th PPG Nationals July 6-8 in Columbus, OH. All 12 Goodguys AutoCross sponsors (Afco, Autometer, BF Goodrich, Detroit Speed, Hurst Shifters, Jet-Hot, Optima Batteries, Popular Hot Rodding, Ridetech, Roadster Shop, Rocket Wheels and Summit Racing Equipment) will field entries in the competition.

Representing Rocket Wheels in the competition will be Robert McGaffin. He will drive his ’65 Olds Cutlass. An accomplished freelance photographer whose work appears in many industry publications, McGaffin started AutoCrossing about five years back.  “My first taste of Goodguys AutoCross was in Joliet during one of the Chicagoland Nationals events” he said. “Bret Voekel tossed me the keys to Ridetech’s ’66 Chevelle and after a few laps, they had to literally pull me out of the car. Shortly after I started looking for a car I could compete with. I wanted an A-body so I could take my sons for rides. Since then, I have worked with Popular Hot Rodding Magazine on developing the car to what it is today and I taken it to many pro-touring events. I won the Motorstate Challenge in 2010 in the under 200 tread wear class. I’ve flogged the Olds many times at Goodguys events over the years and have driven in the Optima Faceoff. I don’t have much racing experience, but AutoCrossing allows me to develop my skills at my pace. It’s a lot like golf. It’s very much an individual sport that you can continually work on your own skills to better yourself and times.”

McGaffin’s Olds is familiar to PHR readers is it has been featured in many issues as a project car being purpose- built it for AutoCross and driving events. It features a 525hp 461 cubic-inch big block Olds motor with a Tremec TKO 600. Underneath the hefty Olds is Detroit Speed A-body suspension with coil over conversion. The “Booster Series” Rocket Racing Wheels are wrapped snugly in BFG KDW II tires.

McGaffin's '65 Olds Cutlass is good looking and well equipped!
