Three-time NHRA Funny Car World Champion Raymond Beadle will be honored as a “Hot Rod Hero” at the Goodguys 20th annual Lone Star Nationals October 5-7 at Texas Motor Speedway in Ft Worth. Beadle will be at the 20th Lone Star Nationals Saturday and Sunday Oct 6 & 7 to sign autographs and meet with fans. Plans are being made to have Ronnie Young’s Blue Max replica – a spot on yellow & blue 1983 Plymouth Arrow on hand as well to display and cackle.
One of drag racing’s true showmen, Beadle was a dominant force on track in the 70s and 80s, winning three consecutive NHRA Funny Car World Championships (’79-’81) behind the wheel of the famed Blue Max. At one point during drag racing’s “match race” heyday Beadle went 30-0 in matches around the country against legends Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, Ed “the Ace” McCulloch, Tom “the Mongoose” McEwen, “Jungle Jim” Liberman, and “T.V. Tommy” Ivo.
In the mid 80s, he continued to field a series of Blue Max Funny Cars but branched out into other forms of motorsport as well including NASAR racing and World of Outlaws Sprint Car competition. With Rusty Wallace driving Beadle’s #27 Kodiak Pontiac, the team hauled in the 1989 Winston Cup Stock Car Championship – the only championship of Wallace’s distinguished NASCAR career.
For his outstanding achievements in motor sport, Beadle was inducted into the American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association’s All-American team in 1980, was a Member of the 11th class of inductees into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, was the 2006 recipient of the Bruton Smith Legends Award in the Texas Motor Sports Hall of Fame and was ranked 20th on the National Hot Rod Association Top 50 Drivers of all time list.
Retired from active competition and team ownership for many years now, Beadle still resides in Dallas staying active with a variety of interests. He regularly attends vintage drag races to hang out with Ronnie Young’s Blue Max team.
