The Roadster Shop, based in Mundelein, Illinois didn’t have to go far to find a driver for their entry in the Goodguys 1st Sponsor Shootout, Sunday July 10th. The Sponsor Shootout rounds out a full weekend of AutoCross action during the Goodguys 14th PPG Nationals presented by Bridgestone.
Phil Gerber, The Roadster Shop’s V.P. of Sales and Marketing will get behind the wheel of Chris Jacobs’ stout ’66 Chevelle. Jacob’s low flying mist-blue beast has been an RS test car since it first hit the ground last year. It features the first-to-be-used Roadster Shop Low Profile Fast Track Chassis with new RS independent rear suspension, Afco remote canister shocks, super light Wilwood Corvette brakes and Weld Racing RTS wheels. The car makes plenty of power thanks to a 427 cubic inch dry sump LS7 linked to a T-56 transmission.
Gerber himself has done well on-track in Columbus. In 2009, he logged the fastest lap of the weekend in the Street Machine of the Year competition taking Barry Blomquist’s ’62 Corvette around the cones in 32.222 seconds. He and his brother Jeremy have logged thousands of AutoCross laps in Roadster Shop test cars over the years, bringing home plenty of Goodguys AutoCross Street Machine wins.
Gerber joins Ridetech’s Bret Voekel and Speed by Spectre’s Brandy Morrow as the event’s only companies to use “in-house” drivers for the 1st Sponsor Shootout.
