-Bob McCoy's flaming hot Tudor launched the 1940 Ford to the forefront of early hot rodding

-Bob McCoy’s flaming hot Tudor launched the 1940 Ford to the forefront of early hot rodding

Next year, two iconic automobiles celebrate major anniversaries. The 75th Anniversary of the 1940 Ford and the 60th Anniversary of the 1955 Chevy will be celebrated by Goodguys Rod & Custom Association. We’re firming up details on the promotions but if you’re an owner of a 1940 Ford or a 1955 Chevy (or Ford for that matter), plan on being part of something special!

The 1940 Ford has become one of hot rodding’s icons, helped in part by Bob McCoy’s flamed ’40 Tudor which graced the cover of Car Craft in October of 1956.

Ford produced three basic models in 1940: the 60 Series, the 85 Series and the DeLuxe 85 Series. The low-end 60 series came as a business coupe, coupe and two or fordoor sedan. The 85 Series was available as a business coupe, coupe, Fordor sedan and station wagon. The DeLuxe version came as Business coupe, convertible coupe, coupe, deluxe sedan Fordor sedan, station wagon and the Tudor sedan. The coupes, in particular, were attractive cars with the seal-beam head lamps integrated into the fenders and the hood pointed to an almost feminine, if not delicate, chrome grille featuring horizontal bars that flowed back towards the cabin. The coupe’s quarter-panel, or opera windows, gave the car a touch of class. The fenders didn’t compete, but flowed well with the beltline and sloping rear deck. The raked windshield gave it a fast look. In all, 541,896 Fords rolled out of the factory.

-Harrison Ford's menacing big block powered all black 1955 Chevy instantly made the car an American classic

-Harrison Ford’s menacing big block powered all black 1955 Chevy in the movie American Graffiti solidified its role as an American classic

While the ’40 Ford is a signature hot rod, the 1955 Chevy is an American classic, helped in large part to pop culture. Harrison Ford’s menacing black ’55 Chevy in the cult classic American Graffiti launched it to the forefront of American rodding, a position is still holds today.

The car was considered a huge turning point for General Motors and was a major success in both sales and performance. It was available in three models: the 150, 210 (Delray), and Bel Air. Its 265 cubic inch V-8 engine, which was featured for the first time, served as a perfect performance platform for hot rodders and drag racers alike.

Although the 1955 Chevrolet did not possess the sharp angles and sculpted styling of designer Virgil Exner’s Chryslers products, General Motors’ chief designer Harley Earl chose a more moderate approach. He recognized that buyers were conservative by nature and the new Chevy was the perfect answer to the more stylized Chrysler. The Chevrolet came in the low-end One-Fifty sedans and station wagons. The Two-Ten models were the mid-range models that featured the Delray Club Coupe, Handyman Station Wagon, Sedan, Sport Coupe and Townsman Station Wagon. The top-of-the-line models were the Bel Air coupes, hardtops and sedans. The Nomad station wagon was a mid-1955 Bel Air series entry.

-Goodguys 28th West Coast Nationals presented by Flowmaster was a dream weekend of amazing cars, sunny skies, happy faces and amazing exhibits!

-Goodguys 28th West Coast Nationals presented by Flowmaster was a dream weekend of amazing cars, sunny skies, happy faces and amazing exhibits!

Some call it the Crown Jewel, some call it the Hot Rod Homecoming, and some call it Perfection. Some just say Pleasanton. Whatever the name, the third week in August in the San Francisco Bay Area is a week-long hot rod happenin, culminating with Goodguys 28th West Coast Nationals.

Drenched in summer sun, this year’s event drew hot rodders from all corners of the world to the Pleasanton Fairgrounds. Over 3,800 cars from 31 states covered every nook of the grounds, painting it in a kaleidoscope candy colors. The industry’s top manufactures stuffed the exhibit buildings and midway with new products, while the Bay Area Engine Modelers thrilled all comers with their amazing scale-model motors. There was also an outstanding display of Bonneville land speed cars, vintage Cushman’s, a full scale model car show, Tether car races, rockin live music with Lil Elmo and the Cosmos, nitro fireups and award ceremonies steeped in tradition.

The legends also came out! We saw rock & roll hall of famer Neil Young in his battery powered “Linc-Volt” 1961 Lincoln, drag strip titans Don “The Snake” Prudhomme and engine guru Ed Pink, along with hot rod heroes Gary “Goodguy” Meadors, “The Rodfather” Andy Brizio and so many more. We saw hot rod journalists Pat Ganahl, Thom Taylor of Hot Rod Magazine, Steve Coonan of the Rodder’s Journal and Tim Bernsau of STREET RODDER. John Ray and his band of crazy Kiwis came by the bus load from New Zealand. Martin Lunqvist and his 5-Swedish hot rod brothers drove their cars across America to be here. You get the picture…it seemed as though EVERYONE was here!

For the early-in-town arrivals, Fred Zimmerman Memorial Hot Rod Week provided four big days of country drives, shop tours, sightseeing and in some instances, free weenies! Thanks to the Danville Dukes for organizing it and putting in all those hours plotting the course! A big shout out to the host stops as well. It was a blast.

It’s also here in Pleasanton that Goodguys honor so many special cars with historical awards. The Stroker McGurk (in honor of recently departed legend Tom Medley), the Jim Ewing Memorial, Billy B Memorial, Deuce Bruce Olson Memorial and others keep the hot rod spirit alive and flourishing. While hot rodding’s past is kept alive here in Pleasanton, the future of our hobby is celebrated as well. Kevin and Angie Bischoff’s ’36 Dodge is the perfect mogul for the youth movement of our hobby. The Bischoff’, who are in their 30s, were the lucky winners of the Goodguys 2014 Flowmaster America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award.

Although the big week and weekend have passed, and a relative calm has begun to settle in, it’s time to start daydreaming and look all the way forward to next August! The 29th West Coast Nationals will be held August 21-23, 2015 right back here at the Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. You owe it to yourself to be here!

-America's Most Beautiful Street Rod - Kevin & Angie Bischoff's 1936 Dodge

-America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod – Kevin & Angie Bischoff’s 1936 Dodge

Thirteen years ago, Pacific Northwest rod builder Kevin Bischoff set out to “make an ugly car beautiful.” He conquered his mission and then some. He and wife Angie’s 1936 Dodge was crowned Goodguys 2014 Flowmaster America’s Most Beautiful street rod, beating out a national cast of finalists during last weekend’s Goodguys 28th West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton.

Working out of his Vancouver, Washington Shop (Kevin’s Restoration), he and his team were able to turn a pre-war stocker into a sleek, elegant and beautiful millennial gem. The upright stance of the sedan was transformed by narrowing then laying the grill shell back one and a half inches and dropping it by one inch. They took two inches off the roof line, took five and a half inches out of the trunk back then laid it (along with the rear window) forward. They added five inches to the bottom of the doors and molded the fenders and running boards for cohesive, flowing lines. Once the gaps were perfect and all was massaged into place, Kevin sprayed it House of Kolor Apple Red, blending in some Brandywine for extra shine.

Not only beautiful, the car runs comfortably down the road thanks to a Morrison air spring chassis outfitted with a Thunderbird steering rack, 9-inch rear end and Wilwood brakes. Te 5-spoke wheels are Billet Specialties “Magnitude” (18×7 front and 201×10 rears). Providing the get up and go is a heavily disguised GM 350 with custom made Chrysler hemi valve covers and Hedman headers. The delicious exhaust note is courtesy of custom two and a half inch exhaust with Flowmaster Hushpower mufflers.

The cabin is just as beautiful as the heavily-reworked exterior. Full leather trimmed seats were stitched by B & R Auto Upholstery, while the modified stock dash houses Classic Instruments’ “BOG” package (Big Ol Gauge). A leather booted Lokar shifter and Billet Specialties steering wheel add sporty elegance.

When the finished jewel, aptly named “Rampage” was displayed at the 2014 Portland Roadster Show this spring, it won the Rose Grand Cup Sweepstakes, signaling great things to come. With the America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod crown added to the mantle, it makes that thirteen year journey worth the effort and then some.

For their win in Pleasanton, Kevin & Angie will receive travel accommodations to the Goodguys 17th Southwest Nationals, November 14-16 in Scottsdale, Arizona to be part of the Goodguys Top 12 cars of the year display. While in Scottsdale, they’ll also receive a custom toolbox from Snap-on and more.

The top five finalists for the Goodguys 2014 America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod award included Janeen Drinkard, Leander, TX (1940 Chevy), Dave Hall, Phoenix, AZ (1939 Ford), Larry Carter, Los Gatos, CA (1933 Ford), Kevin & Angie Bischoff, Vancouver, WA (1936 Dodge) and Justin and Randy Semadini, Jordan, UT (1934 Dodge).

-The Spokane County Fair & Expo Center was filled to capacity!

-The Spokane County Fair & Expo Center was filled to capacity!

Every year, Goodguys visits Spokane for the Great Northwest Nationals and every year we leave town reflecting on how perfect this event always is. This year was again a scenic weekend of ideal sunny weather, hi-quality show cars (both Canadian and domestic) and a summer-like energy which prevailed from Thursday’s opening hot rod cruise right down to Sunday’s farewell awards ceremony!

The Spokane Fair & Expo Center is a quaint, homey, well-manicured show grounds with an equal mix of shade trees, paved cruise lanes and lush green grass. Spokane itself is situated in a large valley with pine trees and wilderness regions within a 20-minute drive so basically, being here feels like summer vacation. It always has.

They also know how to party here! Both Thursday and Friday night, the action fills the parking lot of the Mirabeau Park – the host hotel for the festive weekend. With hundreds of rods, customs & muscle cars on display along with rockin’ live music, the party is a welcome highlight for both participants and locals who want to come out and get a primer for the weekend.

One of the many weekend highlights was semi-local-boy-made-good J.F. Launier bringing his Ridler award-winning ’64 Buick “Rivision” to display. It gave admiring fans, who rooted him on from afar all year a chance to see the landmark car near its home base of Osyoos, BC – just across the border to the North. J.F. also selected the Builder’s Choice awards, hand picking the event’s top 10 rides which he did with aplomb from both the outdoor show & shine as well as from the indoor portion of the event.

As Sunday morning began to warm into afternoon, late model American muscle burst on the scene creating a brilliant mix of new muscle coupled with vintage iron. They take their cars seriously in this region and the new genres of hot rodders flaunted their customized new age Camaro, Challengers and Corvettes!

We love you Spokane! You always charm us with your welcoming spirit, your amazing cars and your spectacular surroundings. We’re already looking forward to next year’s 14th Great Northwest Nationals August 14-16

-Jon Shirley’s 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti Coupe became the first Ferrari ever to win Best of Show at Pebble. Photo by Mark Vaughn/Autoweek

Monterey Car Week wrapped up yesterday with the annual gathering on the lawn – the Pebble Beach Concours. Pebble has always been prime time for car purists, representing the ultimate pinnacle of classic American and European cars. Seeing these regal pre and post-war classics, most of which are painstakingly restored and coach built, sprawled on the greens of the world famous golf course, is a heavenly sight.

Many have spent millions, and still haven’t “won” Pebble’s prestigious Best in Show. But Jon Shirley is now a two-time winner thanks to yesterday’s historic victory with his 1954 Ferrari. It marked the first time a post-war car has won Pebble Beach.

According to Autoweek’s Mark Vaughn, “This is a big deal in the elite classic car collection and restoration world. There were judges, let’s just say some judges, who had said that a post-war car would never win Pebble, let alone a post-war Ferrari”

But it happened yesterday on a classic foggy summer day on the Monterey Peninsula.

Ferrari enjoyed a huge week of publicity at Pebble Beach . Last Thursday, a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO sold for an auction-record $38.115 million at the Bonhams auction. You sure could build a bunch of Ridler-winners for that kind of scratch!

We’ll have complete coverage of Monterey Car Week in a future issue of the Goodguys Goodtimes Gazette. For the first time ever, we sent a reporter there to capture all the excitement, including the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Laguna Seca.

-2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

-2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

If you’ve been paying attention to the automotive news the past few weeks, you’ve no doubt heard all the buzz surrounding the unveiling of the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat. The most powerful factory muscle car ever produced (707hp) now has a twin brother – the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat.

Unveiled yesterday, the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat produces an equal amount of horsepower to the Challenger in Charger skin with slight differentials in drivetrain. Both cars promise to lead class in performance, eclipsing  (on raw numbers at least) competitors like the Ford Shelby GT 500, Chevy Z28 Camaro, BMW M5, Mercedes E63 and Cadillac CTSV among others.

The Challenger and Charger SRT Hellcats will arrive at U.S. dealerships in the first quarter of 2015. Pricing will be announced closer to launch. Here are some highlights to chew on:

-707 horsepower with 650 lb-ft torque
-10.8 second quarter mile elapsed time with a top speed of 204mph
-6.2 liter supercharged hemi
-6 speed manual transmission (Challenger), 8-speed torqueflight automatic (Charger)
-15.4-inch Brembo two-piece rotors with six-piston calipers (Chrysler’s biggest ever)
-20 x 9.5-inch forged aluminum wheels
-900-watt stereo
-Alcantara suede sports seats
-Double wishbone/multi-link suspension with gas shocks
-3 driving modes: Sport, Street and Track
-Available in 11 colors

One last thing. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE bring your Hellcat to a Goodguys All American Sunday in 2015!

-Robust summer thunderstorms dumped too much water on the salt flats to race during the 66th annual Bonneville International Speed Week

The 66th annual Bonneville International Speed Week has been cancelled due to flooding.

According the SCTA website, “The Board is discussing the possibility of extending our next event – The World Finals (Sep 30 – Oct 3) into a full week of racing as a sort of delayed Speed Week. We Thank You all for your patience and understanding. We look forward to seeing you at our next event.”

-Portions of the Bonneville Salt Flats are underwater as the 66th annual Speed Week is set to get underway tomorrow. The SCTA is now shooting for Monday, August 11th to begin racing

After months and months of anticipation, Mother Nature has put a bit of a damper on the 66th annual Speedweek up on the Bonneville Salt Flats. It’s more like the underwater salt flats as of Friday morning, August 8th!

Multiple reports from friends and allies have confirmed the salt is soaked after summer thunderstorms swept through last week. Currently, nobody is allowed on the salt but that will change soon hopefully. One racer we spoke to by phone said “I doubt if any of the fast streamliners will get to run next week” due to course conditions but hope remains!

Here’s an update from the SCTA website, governing body of Speed Week:

Course Condition Update – Salt Report Thurs Aug 7th
After reviewing the conditions, it appears that the courses are drying and we expect continued improvement. The board has decided to start site cleanup on Saturday Aug 9.

Participants will be allowed onto the salt Sunday for pit selection and inspection. We hope to begin racing on Monday Aug 11, based on course conditions.

-Martin and Mia Lunqvist with their deuce coupe

-Martin and Mia Lunqvist with their 5-window Ford deuce coupe

Here at Goodguys, we’ve always known the West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton has an international appeal. Decades of Pleasanton event coverage in both American and foreign magazines has exposed the event, once called “The Perfect Rod Run” by Hot Rod Magazine, to a worldwide audience of hot rodders and car enthusiasts. Over the years, we’ve seen waves of Kiwis, Germans, French and Australian’s come to the event, some with their cars! This year is no exception.

Back in July, we received a note through our Facebook page from a man named Martin Lundqvist from Stockholm, Sweden. Lunqvist informed us that he, his wife Mia along with their friends Ulf & Hampus Holmstrom, Mikael & Helen Bjork, and Hakan and Maria Karlen were shipping their Stockholm-based early Ford hot rods to the States then driving them across country to attend the Goodguys 28th West Coast Nationals presented by Flowmaster. Well, they’ve landed on US soil and true to their word, they’re driving their rods across America!

Their 5,500 mile transatlantic journey began by sending their cars via ocean liner from Sweden to Brunswick, Georgia. Once the cars arrived on July 24th, they began their US tour. Stops have included the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing (Lunqvist is also a top alcohol funny car racer in Sweden), Daytona International Speedway, a few rod runs in the east and midwest, then west on I-40/Route 66 to Las Vegas. After visiting sin city, they’ll head north to Lake Tahoe then all the way west down I-80 to the Bay Area and their ultimate destination of Pleasanton. When all is done, their hot rods will have journeyed over 9,000 miles by sea and land!

Lundqvist considers the trip his “Ultimate Dream.” A hot rod builder in his native country since 1995, his ’32 Ford hiboy coupe features dry lakes-style curb appeal. A do-it-yourself kind of guy, he built the wheels by hand, grafted the German 1937 Adler grill and ’37 Zephyr dash, made the door handles, tail lights and more. As you can see from the pictures below, these Swede’s know how to build hot rods!

When you see them at the West Coast Nationals, offer ‘em a friendly Yankee hand shake. We will certainly be tipping our cap to them as “Ya Gotta Drive ‘Em” hot rod diehards and giving their effort the kind of exposure it deserves!

Here they are:

-The Bay Area Engine Modelers exhibit is a MUST SEE!

-The Bay Area Engine Modelers exhibit is a MUST SEE!

Two extra cool specialty exhibits are planned for the Goodguys 28th West Coast Nationals presented by Flowmaster August 22-24 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds.

Making their annual pilgrimage to the event will be the Bay Area Model Engine Club. These masterful engineers and their mind-boggling scale model engines always manage to outdo themselves, creating new and exciting displays every year! Located inside the Agriculture building all weekend, this year’s exhibit includes some fantastic remote control army tanks (it’s an interactive exhibit so the kids can operate the tanks!) an all-new exhibit of hand-made remote control boats as well as an all new sculpture from artist Michael Cooper.

Over 70 modelers will participate.

While the mini engine show is thrilling fans, a gathering of Land Speed cars will gather to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bonneville Salt Flats! Located at the Clock Tower in the center of the fairgrounds, the Land Speed exhibit will feature 2 streamliner’s (including Dennis Varni’s 345mph “909” car), several door cars (including Jerry Kugel’s 300mph Firebird, John Batto’s & Pat McClendon’s) and Tom & John Walsh’s record-holding 333 roadster.

Joining the Land Speed cars will be Bonneville 200mph Club President Don Warner who will be on hand to answer fans’ questions about how to get involved in land speed racing and share insights on 200mph Club history, membership and more.

Make sure and put these two exhibits on your “must see” lists when you’re visiting the 28th West Coast Nationals! Need to register your pre-’73 show car? Click here!

-Harold and Tracy Chapman’s 1934 Ford roadster – the Goodguys 2013 Flowmaster America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod. Who will win it later this month in Pleasanton?

Beauty will not only be in the eye of the beholder, but the selection committee will also have a say as to what is America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod at the Goodguys 28th West Coast Nationals August 22-24 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds.

The Goodguys 2014 Flowmaster America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod will be crowned Saturday evening, August 23rd in Pleasanton. The award is straight forward – the most beautiful pre-’49 street rod will win. We know of at least 11 stunning rods coming in for the event, some from as far away as the Midwest to compete for the crown.

The winner will not only receive the thrill of a lifetime, they’ll get a custom tool box from Snap-on, a Goodguys Top 12 billet aluminum statuette, and travel accommodations to the  season-ending Goodguys 17th Southwest Nationals November 14-16 at Westworld in Scottsdale. They’ll also receive full color features in the Goodguys Goodtimes Gazette and Goodtimes Yearbook.

The America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod has been selected annually at the West Coast Nationals since the year 2000. All candidates must park in the “Builders Choice” Parking Area Saturday, August 23rd from 7am-noon located in the grass lots on the west side of the Pleasanton Fairgrounds. Finalists will be chosen from this area only.

-The 2nd annual Barrett-Jackson Cup winner…Alan Beers’ 1957 Chevy pick up.

Alan Beers’ 1957 Chevy pickup, the Goodguys 2013 LMC Truck Parts Truck of the Year Late, won the 2nd annual Barrett-Jackson Cup last weekend at the Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada. Though the truck has been on the show circuit for more than 18 months, it edged out this season’s hottest rides.

The four runner-up finalists for the ‘Cup included Don Smith’s 1932 Ford Fordor (Goodguys 2014 Street Rod of the Year winner), Wes Rydell’s 1935 Chevy Phaeton (Goodguys 2014 Street Rod d’Elegance), JF Launier’s 1964 Buick (2014 Ridler winner) and Steve Tornari’s 1967 Nova (Goodguys 2014 Street Machine of the Year winner).

The truck’s builders Jason and Jim Smith of the Hot Rod Garage in Sand Springs, Oklahoma worked on the truck five straight years before finishing it and putting it onto the show circuit back in March of 2013.

Modifications include a 3-inch chop, flush-mounted glass, a pie-cut hood, a reshaped nose, and a modified front bumper. Greening Auto Company custom-machined many of the truck’s parts, including the trick taillights and steering wheel. The paint is Sherwin Williams Quicksilver and Tungsten.

Underneath, the custom frame runs Fatman Fabrications suspension, a Ford 9-inch rearend, Bilstein coilovers, and 15-inch Baer rotors with custom-machined calipers by Greening. Greening also whittled the 20 and 22-inch wheels! Power is a 540ci built by Chaz Rose with vintage 1960s Crower fuel injection that’s been converted to modern EFI. It’s backed with a GearStar 4L60E transmission.

Chuck Rowland at CAR Upholstery in in Tulsa crafted the interior using raspberry leather, one-off seats, and Classic Instruments gauges with Greening-machined bezels in the custom dash.

In winning, Beers walked away with $30,000 as well as another $22,000 in prizes. The selection committee for the 2014 Barrett Jackson Cup included So Cal Speed Shop’s Pete Chapouris, Bob Millard of the ISCA and Bobby Alloway.

-George Poteet will drive the twin-turbo “Speed Demon” streeamliner at Bonneville next week. His aim? 500mph

The 66th annual SCTA Speed Week kicks off next Wednesday on the Bonneville Salt Flats! Land speed racing is so cherished by grass roots hot rodders, racers and fans partly because it’s the last frontier of American motor sport to remain unmolested by prize money and corporate sponsorship. There is no pay window on the salt flats. Bragging rights and the glory of achieving new milestones of speed suffice. Its always been that way. And we love it.

Being the 100th anniversary of Bonneville, this year’s Speed Week takes on extra significance. Entries are up, hopes are high and it’s almost time to cut it loose.

According to our friends over at Bangshift.com, no less than 9 teams in attendance have their sights set on eclipsing 500mph. Lofty goal indeed but certainly doable.

Leading the charge to 500mph is Memphis based “Gentleman” George Poteet in the sleek and powerful Speed Demon . Let’s be real – Poteet has to be favored off of last year’s 462mph blast (making them the world’s fastest piston-driven car). He’ll push the twin-turbo Earl Duttweiler-tuned Gen 1 Chevy small block as hard as he can. The car makes an estimated 2300 horsepower!

Team Vesco, Danny Thomspon, Dalton-Jackson-Mayer, Team Carbinite, the Nish Family, our friend Charlie Nearburg, Richmond and Stark, and the Hass-Shipley ‘liner are others hoping to exceed their Destination 500mph.

We wish all of these brave men and their crews the best and hope they all come home safe.

In the Destination 300 category, our friend and former Goodguys Trendsetter Alan Johnson returns to the salt flats with Paul & Betty Gilliam’s Stupidbaker door car. Since last year’s debut (which netted a 226mph clocking) they’ve done extensive dyno and wind tunnel testing. The smart money is on these folks to crush 300mph!

That’s just some of the excitement on tap! Over 540 cars have pre-entered Speed Week so there will be constant action during the August 9-15 event. We’ll keep our eye on any 500mph-plus blasts and keep y’all posted.

We’d also like to take a quick moment to tip our cap to our Goodguys founder and chairman Gary Meadors. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Gary joining the Bonneville 200mph Club! Driving the Dozier & Hegarty Chrysler flathead-8 powered streamliner, Gary ran a top speed of 223.220 in August 1994.
