Corky Coker of Coker Tire has a new TV show, “Backroad Gold,” which will debuted last night on the Travel Channel. It was a blast to watch!
The show features our friend Corky and his son-in-law Greg Cunningham scouring the back roads, highways and small towns of the Southeast for forgotten classics, where Coker buys and restores his finds out of the Honest Charley Garage. The show also features a healthy dose of Corkey’s family including his father Harold (who does a great job busting Coker’s chops) and his daughter Casey who runs Honest Charley’s.
It’s great vintage automotive programming to be sure. Make sure and visit the Travel Channel website here to find your local listings for Backroad Gold.
While looking ahead to the Hot Rodder’s of Tomorrow Engine Challenge series this year, we take a quick look back at last year’s outstanding competition!
Team Moroso from Eastern Oklahoma County Tech Center in Choctaw, Oklahoma won the 2013 Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge Championship at the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) trade show in Indianapolis.
The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge, which will be held at 4 Goodguys events this season, is designed to encourage high school teens to take an interest in the performance aftermarket. Each Hot Rodder team, which consists of five students and one instructor, competes to disassemble and reassemble an engine with aftermarket components in the shortest amount of time.
Team Moroso was composed of Callie Hunter, Ryan Campbell, Alexander Versteeg, Connor Hixenbaugh, Connor Carrizales and Nicholas Brown, according to the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow. Jim LaFevers served as the team’s instructor.
-All signs point to Goodguys giving away this 2014 Ford Fiesta this year. The design may change from the rendering shown
Goodguys and Ford Racing have teamed up for the 5th consecutive year to give away yet another brand new car! This year’s giveaway machine will be the all new Ford Fiesta. The versatile hot hatch gained worldwide acclaim back in 2010 when rally racing superstar Ken Block rolled out his Monster Energy-backed Fiesta ST in World Rally Championship competition.
Fiesta gets the most out of every corner, thanks to the technical precision of its Ford-tuned suspension. Taking on straightaways is a smooth affair, too, when you combine electric power-assisted steering with the proprietary Ford invention, active nibble control. Covert aerodynamic design and critical technology such as a PowerShift six-speed automatic® and 1.6L Ti-VCT Duratec® I4 engine with twin-independent variable cam timing make it a responsive and fuel-responsible driving experience.
Like the 2013 Goodguys Ford Racing Focus giveaway car, this year’s Fiesta giveaway will feature custom graphics, a great stance and all kinds of other custom goodies from Goodguys! Stop by the Goodguys Giveaway kiosk at any 2014 Goodguys event for your chance to win!

Each year John Shapiro and his staff at Cleveland based Cruisin’ Times Magazine run their “Top Ten Best of 2013” feature in the January issue. Nobody does a better job of breaking down the Ohio hot rodding scene better than these guys.
Their Top Ten Best Of lists cover the gamut from small cruise-ins to the state’s biggest events. The Goodguys PPG Nationals was once again voted #1 by Cruisin Times readers in the Regional Events (shows with 1,000-plus cars)! It’s not only an honor to be voted #1, it’s a privilege to be able to host an event of this magnitude in the Buckeye State.
Since it began in 1997, the Goodguys PPG Nationals has come into its own as THE summer destination for our industry. It’s also a favorite of the city of Columbus. The Ohio Expo Center, the Columbus Police Dept and all the hotels and restaurants – band together to roll out the red carpet for hot rodders nationwide.

Goodguys AutoCross got its start eight years ago in 2006. Ridetech founder Bret Voelkel brought his “Street Challenge” AutoCross program and timing equipment to the Goodguys Nashville Nationals that year to see if it would offer an exciting alternative to normal show & shine activity. “Basically, I grew tired of sitting in a lawn chair,” Voelkel quipped.
To say it caught on is a gross understatement! It exploded to the forefront and today is a huge part of what a Goodguys event is all about. If offers action, excitement, noise and grueling competition in a user-friendly platform.
The best news? EVERYONE who enters a car at a Goodguys event can run the course and participate for FREE! The only pre requisite being your vehicle must pass a basic safety inspection. The rules are pretty straight forward and relatively basic – DOT tires with a tread wear limited to 200 are mandatory. So are seatbelts. You can’t be an idiot. Sound good? You’re in!
